About Us

History

The Nateschwara Theatre is one of the oldest cultural platforms for performing Indian arts in Switzerland. It was founded in 1997 by the Indian artist and dance and music teacher Vijaya Rao and her husband, the meditation and yoga teacher Anton Tönz. Mrs. Rao is known both in India and far beyond our borders as a dance master, choreographer, composer and teacher of the classical Indian dance style, Bharata Natyam, and her name stands for quality and authenticity. Although it emerged from the artistic activities of the Nateschwara Academy and was initially maintained and financed by it, the performances were never limited to its own productions. Countless culturally outstanding concerts and dance performances from Mrs. Rao’s motherland were brought to the Swiss public at the Nateschwara Theatre in Baden during this time. (See: Gallery)

Association

To continue the rich tradition and artistic heritage, the Nateschwara Theatre Association (NTA) was founded on 2nd June 2024. This new, independent organisation will continue the Nateschwara Theatre in the same spirit and present local and international, both classical
Indian and selected European art. The Nateschwara Theatre Association is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion and propagation of the performing arts. Its aim is to promote cultural diversity and artistic excellence and to contribute to the enrichment of the cultural landscape. It aims to create a platform for artists and art lovers that unites traditional and modern art forms. Our vision is to be a center of creativity and cultural exchange that inspires and connects people of all ages and backgrounds. We are determined to promote art and culture through high quality theatre productions and cultural events. We consider these values to be essential components of an inclusive and cosmopolitan society. (See: Membership)

The team

The Nateschwara Theatre Association consists of a young team that manages and maintains the Nateschwara Theatre with great enthusiasm and vigour. The theatre founders support them in word and deed until they develop their own roots, on the basis of which the Nateschwara Theatre can develop a new momentum of its own.

“As both a member of the board and a student, the Nateschwara Theater in Baden holds a special place in my heart. Its rich cultural heritage and dedication to preserving traditional performing arts create a deeply inspiring environment. The theater not only provides a space for artistic expression but also serves as a hub for community connection and learning. It fosters creativity and celebrates diversity through its performances, encouraging students like myself to explore and embrace the beauty of different art forms. Being a part of this institution allows me to appreciate the power of the arts in shaping both personal growth and collective understanding. The Nateschwara Theater is truly a gem in Baden’s cultural landscape.” – Arun Balasingam
