A fascinating evening of Sufi music and Sufi-inspired Kathak dance.
Sufi music is a genre of music influenced by Sufism, such as Sufi poets Rumi, Hafez, Bulleh Shah and Khwaja Ghulam Farid and many others.
Sufi dance (or Sufi spinning), is a physically active meditation that originated among the Sufis and is still practiced today by the Sufi dervishes of the Mevlevi order. It is a traditional dance that takes place within the Sema or a worship ceremony in which the dervishes (also called Semazens) strive for perfection or the so-called Kemal. Through the circular dance movements, the dervish strives for unity with the divine, which is expressed throughout the universe in rotational movements. Long ago, this dance form was incorporated into the Indian Kathak dance style and is now known as Sufiyana Kathak.
